Gabe graduated Stanford in 2005, where he wrote an honors thesis in the Religious Studies Department on music as a ritual technology and performed music research at the Stanford Sleep Laboratory. Following his bachelors, he spent 4 years as a Visiting Scholar at Stanford Center for Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA). During that period, Gabe obtained funding for, organized and ran the music therapy program at UCSF Children’s Hospital. He organized two conferences on music and neuroscience inside the Stanford Music Department and the Stanford Institute for Creativity and the Arts (SICA). These became the Music, Rhythm and The Brain Symposium Series. He went on to assemble, edit, and publish a book on music and neuroscience, working with 11 neuroscientists. It was called, Music, Science, and the Rhythmic Brain: Cultural and Clinical Implications and was published by Routledge. After leaving UCSF and Stanford, he started a ceramic musical instruments business (stoneinstruments.com) and sold his work across the U.S. For next decade, Gabe taught private music lessons to large and small groups. He went onto get an interdisciplinary doctorate (Ed.D.) in educational game design at Columbia University Teachers College. Situated between the Music, Computer Science, and Art departments, Gabe wrote a dissertation on thinking across disciplines, using models of timing to think between domains. He has gigged as a professional drummer since his early 20s, and has recorded in many bands. In 2016 Gabe learned about programming synthesizers and went onto build the music tools currently featured in Polypad, along with a collection of 50 lessons free to the public on teaching math through music and sound.
