This presentation explores the link between cultural relevance and cognitive demand in math tasks. We'll discuss incorporating culturally relevant materials in math education and designing tasks reflecting students' lived experiences so that they can mathematize the world around them. The aim is to inspire and equip teachers to create cognitively demanding and culturally relevant math tasks for deep learning. Join us to foster inclusive learning with tasks that excite and resonate with all students! Participants will understand what Culturally relevant and cognitively demanding (CRCD) tasks are and why they are vital to the mathematics learning experience. Throughout the session, I will emphasize relationship building, acknowledging students' funds of knowledge and cultural capital as resources. Participants will engage in conversations discussing CRCD, their own experiences with mathematics, and the implications those identities may have on their teaching pedagogy and CRCD implementation. Participants will engage in activities to examine instructional practices and materials through an equitable mathematics lens. Participants will take away a template that can be used to tailor curriculum resources provided by school districts or other sources, ensuring that tasks are rich, engaging, and equitable To embed activities that support an equitable mathematics teaching perspective, I will illustrate examples aimed at centering students’ funds of knowledge, learning styles, and cultural capital as resources to help students make connections between students' perspectives and mathematics topics and make sense of the mathematics. Illustrations include Grades 3-5 mathematics tasks in Number Sense and Operations Domain.
