Description

Desmos Math 6-A1 is an innovative, problem-based curriculum that leverages the promise of technology to help students build meaning in math class. Our middle school has been using Desmos Math for the past three years, and our class of 2025 experienced the entire 6-A1 scope in that time. When adopting any new curriculum, there is a learning curve for teachers as they learn to utilize a new set of materials, and this was certainly the case for me with Desmos. There are challenges associated with a completely blended learning environment, and the high-yield routines that are emphasized throughout each lesson take time to master. As Amplify Desmos Math (ADM) finds its way into an increasing number of schools, more teachers will be facing these challenges, some for the first time. This presentation will include reflections from the past three years in order to provide teachers and administrators with guidance about how to plan and prepare for a year with ADM, and will also include examples of how to implement the freely available resources from Desmos Classroom. Learning Objectives: Experience the joy of learning math with interactive, student-centered lessons. Recognize what resources are available for planning and implementation of ADM. Reflect on the challenges associated with changing what, or how, you teach in the math classroom. Participants Can Expect: Active participation in a sample Desmos 6-A1 Lesson Opportunities for questions about Desmos Classroom, Desmos 6-A1, ADM… whatever your level of experience! Time to explore free Desmos 6-A1 lessons, or to work on the ADM platform if they already have access.
