NCTM emphasizes the importance of balancing conceptual understanding with procedural fluency to create a deeper and more robust mathematical foundation for students (2014). However, there is often a tension between developing conceptual understanding and allowing students to practice procedural skills to meet mathematical learning goals. Similar to Legos, by balancing free play and step-by-step, teachers can strike the right between conceptual understanding and procedural fluency. This session will focus on using Desmos Classroom, to can create meaningful shifts in their instruction to create a balanced student-centered classroom.
