Date & Time
Thursday, July 10, 2025, 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Description

Summary for Program: AI tools are valuable resources to build and extend student thinking. In this session, you'll explore how AI can deepen students' mathematical understanding through the use of creative prompts. This hands-on, computer-based, minds-on experience will immerse you in practical classroom applications of AI. AI novices are welcome! <> Extended Description of Session: In today’s rapidly evolving world, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a crucial tool, not just for technology experts, but for educators looking to foster deeper thinking and problem-solving skills in their students (Borge, 2020, Collins & Halverson, 2018). This session is designed to explore how AI can be leveraged in the math classroom to enhance student engagement, raise Depth of Knowledge (DoK) levels, and strengthen mathematical understanding The session will begin with an overview of how AI tools can support student thinking. Rather than using AI as a passive tool, we will focus on how students can engage with AI to actively build, challenge, and extend their understanding of mathematical concepts. From creative AI prompts that encourage critical thinking to tasks that require students to interact with AI to solve complex problems, participants will discover new ways to bring AI into their teaching toolkit. During the hands-on portion, participants will use their own devices to work directly with AI tools in real-time. This computer-based exploration will allow educators to see firsthand how AI can be integrated into math lessons, guiding students to think more deeply about the “why” behind mathematical processes. We will discuss how to develop prompts that require students to justify and evaluate solutions, analyze patterns, and even create their own problem-solving strategies using AI. Participants will also learn strategies to scaffold AI use for students of varying abilities. Whether working with a class of AI novices or more advanced students, we will examine how AI can be tailored to different learning needs and how it can be used to promote metacognition in the math classroom. By encouraging students to think about their thinking and reflect on their problem-solving approaches, AI can be a powerful tool for enhancing student learning and growth. Throughout the session, educators will engage in reflective discussion and collaborative problem-solving. We will explore potential challenges and misconceptions about using AI in education, addressing common concerns like equity, accessibility, and fostering genuine understanding. Participants will leave with practical ideas for integrating AI into their classroom, along with sample lesson plans and prompts that they can adapt for their students. Whether you’re a seasoned AI user or completely new to the concept, this session is for you. You will leave with a clear understanding of how AI can transform your math classroom into a space where students actively create, reflect, and think critically about mathematics.
