Description
Sadly, there are many students (and adults) who feel as though they are not good at math and as a result not a “math person.” I firmly believe that we are all math people in that many of our daily activities are mathematical in nature though we don’t always recognize it. In this session we will explore ways that teachers can push back against the “bad at math” rhetoric and promote the development of healthy mathematics identity in their students. These include the use of open problems, the broadening of our definition of mathematics, the inclusion of diverse areas of mathematics and writing/discussion prompts focused on what it means to be good at math and who has and can excel in the subject.
